Joseph born on 28 May 1887, the son of Joseph (1852-1896) and Lucy (née Longden, 1857-1900) Hatton. He had an older brother, William Longden (b. 1880) and two older sisters, Jancy (b. 1881) and Alice Mary (b. 1885) as well as 3 younger brothers – Thomas (b. 1889), Fred (b. 1892) and Ernest (b. 1896). He was living with the family in Church Street, Spondon in 1891 and attended Spondon School; by 1901 he was a farm servant at Elvaston. In 1910, he married Elizabeth Ann Swift at St Werburgh’s Church and a year he was a Corporation labourer when they were living at 39 Church Hill. They had 4 children – Frederick Edward (1911-1989), Marjorie Jane (1912-1955, married George Burton in 1940), George William (born 1916 but died within a year) and Thomas (born 1917).
He died of wounds in Toxteth Military Hospital, Liverpool on 25 November 1918 and was buried in Spondon Cemetery 5 days later. According to the Derby Daily Telegraph of 30 November, he had served ‘in the East’.
His widow married Walter Thompson at Long Eaton in 1930 but was a widow again 7 years later. In 1939, she was living at 77 Cambridge Street and died in 1948 at the age of 68.
